reiki
Rei - universal
Ki - energy/life force
Reiki (pronounced ray-kee) is a method of tapping into and utilising the universal non-physical energy which animates all living things. This energy or Ki flows through all things; when your Ki is strong you will feel healthy, confident and full of energy and enthusiasm for life. When it is low, you will feel weak and subdued and you are much more likely to become ill. It is Ki which animates your physical organs and tissues, so when it becomes blocked or stagnated it will have an adverse effect on the health and well-being of your body.
Ki responds and is affected by your thoughts and emotions; all negative thoughts and their resulting emotions will cause a disruption in the flow of energy which again can lead to illness. The negative thoughts and feelings you have affect the flow of your energy more than anything else; by receiving Reiki blocked or stagnated energy is allowed to flow freely again and your body is able to utilise its innate healing capabilities.
The
practice of Usui Reiki is a method of healing which was developed by Dr Mikao Usui in Japan early in the 20th century. The word 'Reiki' is a generic word in Japan, and is used to describe many types of healing and spiritual work - it is not exclusive to the system of healing based on Dr. Usui's method. The system of healing that evolved from Dr. Usui's method is called the Usui System of Natural Healing or Usui Reiki Ryoho. As with all systems of Reiki it is a holistic therapy as it works on every level; energetically, physically, emotionally and mentally. Eastern medicine has always recognised and worked with this energy, it is known as ‘ki’ in Japan, ‘chi’ in China and ‘prana’ in India. Acupuncture, T’ai chi, EFT and Yoga are also based on this free-flowing energy.
Although Reiki can be classed as spiritual in nature it is not religious in any way nor is it affiliated to or connected with any of the world religions. Reiki works whether you believe in it or not, and it works whatever your spiritual or religious beliefs.
how does reiki work?
Back in the early 1900's, Albert Einstein told us that everything is composed of energy; everything physical that can
be seen and touched, as well as the abstract reality of our mind - our thoughts and emotions. This universal energy surrounds and permeates everything. Your body is electrical in nature; you can see evidence of this in many ways - from getting small electric shocks when pushing a shopping trolley round a supermarket, or when you shut a car door, to briefly touching another person -sometimes you can literally see sparks! If you were to touch something very hot you would feel pain instantly because the message is transmitted electrically along your neural pathways to your brain, and lets not forget that hospitals rely on this energy to monitor your health -both the heart and the brain can be connected to machines in order to measure the strength of the electrical impulses being emitted.
You are alive because this universal energy or 'life force' flows through you; it nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions. Your life force can become disrupted through illness, disease and when you accept, either consciously or unconsciously, negative thoughts or feelings about yourself. These negative thoughts and feelings attach themselves to your energy field and cause a disruption in the flow of your life force. Reiki is the process of 'tapping into' this universal energy and it heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy which raises the level of vibration. Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, which allows the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way once again.
how can reiki help me?
Reiki is such a gentle therapy that absolutely everyone in any condition can receive a treatment; from the very young to the very old or infirm and women in the early stages of pregnancy. Reiki cannot bring any harm to the recipient, although like all holistic therapies it can induce a healing crisis which is explained here.
One of the main documented effects of Reiki is that during a treatment brainwave patterns change; they move from the normal active beta state towards a delta pattern which is the state that occurs during calm restful sleep or meditation. Entering this state regularly helps to combat stress, and it can also lead to physical pain relief. Below a few examples of the ways in which Reiki can be of benefit.

Reiki is a powerful healing modality which promotes well-being and healing in every area of life; it allows feelings of positivity, peace and hopefulness to come to the surface. It raises your vibrational levels, boosting your energy resulting in clarity of mind and a centeredness which enables you make the most of every single day. Reiki can be whatever you want it be; whether that's simply an effective way of experiencing deep relaxation, managing any conditions you may have or becoming more in-tune with your body and mind.
what should I expect?
Your first session will begin with a short consultation, in which we will go over your medical history and discuss any issues you have, conditions you are dealing with, and what you wish to get out of the session.
You will then be asked to lie down on the treatment table; you remain fully clothed and will only need to remove your shoes. There are cushions and blankets available to make you as comfortable as possible. Your therapist will then take couple of moments to centre herself and will then begin the treatment by placing her hands over your head and various other points working down your body. There are some areas of the body where your therapist will lightly place her hands on you, and some where there will be no contact - if you prefer there to be no contact throughout the treatment this is not a problem. Halfway through the treatment your therapist will ask you to turn onto your back so that all areas of your body can be accessed. If mobility is a problem for you it is possible to receive Reiki sitting in a chair, just let your therapist know what you require.
reiki lineage
Reiki lineage refers to the line of Reiki Masters that leads to the student. For traditional Reiki the line begins with Dr Usui, and continues with one of his Reiki Masters, and then to one of theirs and so it continues. For a healing system to be called Reiki and be recognized as such, the lineage must trace back to Mikao Usui. Below is my Reiki lineage.

Dr Chujiro Hayashi
Hawayo Takata
