stop smoking
You most likely already know that smoking is bad for your health; the often graphic warnings on cigarette packets, the adverts for local NHS stop smoking campaign ‘New Leaf’, the fact that smoking is now banned down the pub, as well as the ever increasing prices are all draw our attention to the dangers of smoking.
You may also have already tried to quit smoking, or maybe you feel under pressure from your loved ones – partners, children, and friends, or perhaps from your GP or healthcare practitioner.
So why is it so hard to give up smoking?
Because although you want to give up consciously, subconsciously you have other ideas! Your subconscious is incredibly powerful; it can retain and process an unthinkable amount of information, and is far superior to the conscious mind. So if the conscious mind and subconscious mind disagree about something, your subconscious will always win the battle.
It can be hard to imagine but very often there are hidden benefits to the things in our life which seem negative or destructive, most especially habits like smoking. The types of benefits that your subconscious could see in smoking are limitless- things like smoking makes you feel more confident, or more secure, or you get breaks away from your desk at work.
There are most likely habits or rituals that make you feel good too – like always having a c
igarette after your evening meal, or with a drink, or in the car. Smoking may calm your nerves, or quell boredom; it can also feel like an excellent stress reliever. Every time you have a cigarette you are re-enforcing the message that ‘smoking makes me feel relaxed/confident’, or ‘a cigarette always comes after a meal’, or ‘I can’t have a glass of wine/cup of tea without a cigarette’ etc. There’s not much else that you repeat 10 – 40 times a day!
These types of habits and unconscious attachments to the perceived benefits of smoking can be almost impossible to overcome through willpower alone – the subconscious mind will always win out over your conscious thoughts, even more so when these habits, beliefs and feelings are so deeply ingrained into your mental programming due to consistent and continued repetition.
"Hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking, according to the largest ever scientific comparison of ways of breaking the habit. Willpower, it turns out, counts for very little" (New Scientist, Vol 136 issue 1845 31 Oct 92, page 6).
