What Are Phobias?
Phobias are an example of your fight or flight response going into overdrive, the feelings and bodily reactions we get when we are confronted with something which holds great fear for us is the minds way of telling us ‘you are in imminent danger, RUN’.
However, in most cases, the thing which frightens us is in reality not a threat to our safety, the danger is only in our mind – but this does not make the fear any less real or intense. For example having a phobia of spiders, in this country at least, is not justified; spiders in this country are not poisonous – they pose no real threat to us. However many people have an intense fear of spiders and when confronted with one or often even the thought of one their heart will start racing, their palms will sweat, they will feel that panic or dread in the pit of their stomach, adrenalin kicks in and their instinct is to run away. Where there is great panic there can even be a fear of death or dying. No matter how unlikely this my be in reality, when in the grip of terror, logic goes out of the window - the fear is very real.
Many people think they have to live with their phobia, and will avoid situations or places where they may be confronted with their fear – such as being unable to get on a plane for your summer holiday, or refusing to go to countries which have snakes. Sometimes phobias can be over something completely common place, anything from cotton wool, to turning into on-coming traffic in your car. Phobias like this can make life incredibly difficult and stressful, and there is often not just the actual fear, but also an intense fear of the fear.
How Can You Help Me?
The good news is that you do not have to live with your phobia; using a combination of Emotional Freedom Techniques, Neural Linguistic Programming and Clinical Hypnotherapy, between us we will be able to entirely eradicate a phobia, often, in just one session. Depending on the complexity of the phobia it may take up to 3 sessions, but most of my clients have experienced a satisfactory relief of their fear in one session – and sometimes even within 20 minutes!
You will not need to face your fear head-on, I do not agree with forcing my clients to confront their fears as a way of getting over them, this only re-enforces the fear. We move at a pace that you are comfortable with.
Before we begin we will agree on what exactly you are wanting to get out of the session; in the example of spiders it may be that you want your fear completely eradicated, if you’re afraid of flying you may simply wish to be able to get on a plane without having a full blown panic attack.
It is important to note that I will not remove reasonable fear – some things will always require a healthy respect, the therapy will not make you feel invincible or untouchable, it will only remove the excess fear, the unnecessary fear. Some things such as public speaking will always create slight anxiety – this is a normal reaction to the adrenalin your body releases, however there is a big difference between a healthy dose of nervous anticipation and full blown panic at the mere thought of public speaking.
Below are just a selection of the kind of issues that have been successfully and permanently dealt with:
- fear of spiders
- fear of snakes
- driving test anxiety
- exam anxiety
- fear of public speaking
- fear of slugs
- fear of dogs
- fear of childbirth
- fear of driving in the dark
- fear of driving on motorways
- fear of flying
- fear of the dentist
- fear of needles
- fear of vomiting
I also have experience in dealing successfully with issues such as panic attacks, generalised anxiety and agoraphobia. These kinds of fears often have many aspects relating to them, and they also have many memories and/or experiences linked to them which reinforce the fear and anxiety - this means that it can take longer to deal with your issue in its entirety.
How Long Will It Take?
For a specific fear or phobia the amount of session you will need varies with each client, most often between 1-3 sessions. It just depends on how you respond to the techniques used, we will probably be able to tell fairly early on whether you will need another session or two. Each session will last 90 minutes, and once we both feel that your fear has been removed, it will be permanent. In instances where you feel the fear has 'come back' it will actually be because a particular aspect of your phobia has not been uncovered and dealt with, for example if you have a fear of spiders, you may not have realised that a part of that fear is their spiderwebs - so the next time you see a web you react in the same way as before and think that the phobia has not gone. This does not mean the therapy has not worked, it simply means that this particular aspect needs addressing. In the very unlikely event that you feel you do need a follow up session after a resolution, then this will be offered to you free of charge.
